Dexter: The Complete Final Season [Blu-ray]

Disappointing Season; Honest Assesment (with no big spoilers)
This is an honest review for the person who is actually considering buying season 8 and has presumably seen one or more previous seasons. (no one starts on the final season, do they?) With a couple minor exceptions, I won't spoil anything.

It seems many of the other reviews have taken issue with the plot; love it or hate it. I'm here to tell you, it's irrelevant. Why? An implausible or unrealistic plot will always be trumped by character development. If the characters are believable, likeable, captivating, and have chemistry with one another, the show will be fun to watch, irrespective of the plot. Imagine this for a plot line: "Protagonist serial killer rescues stepsister after she falls in love with doctor who is also a serial killer and protagonist's brother." Plausible? Not a chance. But it doesn't matter- everyone agrees, season 1 was one of the most enjoyable to watch. It was all because of the characters. Great characters make the story captivating regardless of how...

Slow, Awkward Ending - a Complete Let Down of Expectations
WARNING: SPOILERS

I would have given this last season of Dexter one star, but out of respect for the series as a whole, I gave it two. I loved this series! I watched faithfully and never missed an episode. And when I heard this was the last season, I was so hoping that the writers would come up with a spectacular ending (not necessarily happy, but something suitably jaw dropping). What a disappointment!! This season (to put it in a word) STUNK! The pace was unbelievably slow and monotonous; you thought, surely, surely, the writers were just building up to a grand finale - but then the finale came and it was not grand, or jaw dropping.

The writing was weak, the interaction between the characters was weak. It was like the writers just gave up and went on auto-pilot. The bad guy of the season, the Brain Surgeon, should have been Dexter's greatest challenge - ending with an antagonist that he either couldn't beat, or gave his life trying to beat (which would...

Disappointing, Illogical, Morally Incoherent - A Lengthy Review
***Spoilers***

Incredibly disappointing. I have followed Dexter from Season 1, and have largely been a huge fan of the show. The writing, particularly in the early seasons, was incredible. It was well-executed, highly psychological, and exciting. The show, simply speaking, was 'on', firing on all cylinders. While many have perceived the later seasons as reflecting a decline in terms of direction, writing, excitement, etc., I maintained my appreciation of the show as a whole for many reasons. I also appreciated the development of the characters, the plot lines, and what could have been presented as a satisfying ending to a great show. While I didn't necessarily agree with various choices made (elements of Seasons 5 and 6 come to mind), I understood and accepted the underlying thinking. Season 8, in essence, ran the series into the ground. As a result, this isn't an easy review to write.

The writing, overall, for the end of the series comes across as though it was...
