Greenwich Village: Music That Defined a Generation

So So
Historically relevant, but slow, boring and disappointing. Shame, because this is a such a great topic. The film producers squandered a terrific opportunity due to poor editing. Very slow-paced.

This wasn't very interesting and it could have been!
The editors of this documentary made some odd choices about the music videos they chose to include in this somewhat boring film, namely some one-hit wonders mixed in with The Weavers, Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell, etc., which was too bad and puzzling. Some of the interviewees lost all credibility with me, especially the guy who said that the Village was responsible for a lot of the momentum behind the civil rights movement, the feminist movement and the anti-war movement. This statement was overblown, even for a baby boomer lost in his hazy, pot-smoke-tinged reveries of the past, especially given his white man privilege. Seriously, bro? Step down, son, shut up and do some reading. Um, Rosa Parks? Betty Friedan? I believe that Elizabeth Cady Stanton died in 1902, so I don't think she was hanging out in the Village in the '60s. Also, the SDS was founded in Ann Arbor. These people clearly suffer from San Francisco Bay Area-special-snowflake disease and I say that with love as a native.

Really enjoyed it!!!
Loved the history, the music, loved the accuracy of the information, the historical black and white footage, loved it all...

Dear Dumb Diary

All around enjoyable family movie
I watched this movie with my 8 y/o niece, and was actually paying attention to most of it. The movie's highlight was Emily Alyn Lind's acting (From the movie "Won't Back Down"). The musical numbers were unexpected but made the movie fun. Also, the part of the aunt, played by Laura Bell Bundy, was very good too. Overall, this would be great movie to watch with your kids. It's a lot better than the oversaturation of Pixar films which are rampant these days.

Sure To Charm Your School-Aged Kids
If you enjoy comedy mixed with great musical numbers then you will love "Dear Dumb Diary." "Dear Dumb Diary" is about a girl named Jamie Kelly who attends Mackeral Middle School and dreams of being popular and of having the boy of her dreams, Hudson, love her. She writes all of her secrets and dreams in her diary. She is jealous of a beautiful girl named Angeline who she feels gets more attention from Hudson than Jamie feels she deserves.

My favorite character in the movie is Jamie Kelly (Emily Alyn Lind). She is easy to relate to as most teenagers have insecurities and lots of dreams of how their life could be better. Jamie keeps her room really messy and only cleans it when she wants to find her missing diary. She is funny and has a great sense of humor. Emily is a very talented girl and does a wonderful job of acting, singing and dancing in this movie.

The musical numbers in "Dear Dumb Diary" are well choreographed and very entertaining. They add a...

My kids love this movie & so do I.
When I first put this DVD in I thought oh no...I was seriously worried I just wasted $13 when I picked this up at Wal-Mart. Boy was I wrong! When I actually sat down and watched it I absolutely loved it. The musicals in it completely make the movie and I love the choreography. When I put this on my kids are glued to it.

Burning Love: Complete First Season

Will You Accept My Hose? A Brilliant Web Comedy That Skewers Everything You Love And Hate About Reality TV
Note: "Burning Love" was a web series designed and showcased for Yahoo, so its contents were originally free to everyone. Most episodes ranged anywhere from 8-13 minutes (roughly) and the listed running time is a compilation that puts these various episodes together.

In truth, I watch too much reality television. It's a difficult genre to parody because it's already become a parody of itself! That why the web series "Burning Love" is so spot-on hilarious. Executive produced by Ben Stiller and loaded with familiar faces, this spoof of "The Bachelor" hits every note correctly and demonstrates an inherent silliness that is as outrageous as it is truthful. The show has had three real seasons so far (and two others that are mentioned in the shows but aren't so real). The second series was a take on "The Bacholorette" and the third "Bachelor Pad." "Burning Love" was the year of Mark Orlando (a perfect Ken Marino). Orlando is a studly firefighter played with a clueless charm and...

Treme: The Complete Third Season

It's All Connected
'Treme', the third season, brought the characters, Hurricane Katrina, the plot lines of each person together to show the connections. We started out in season one with the after affects of Katrina, up close and personal. The hurricane smashed the city, the families, and lives of it's inhabitants. Season one told their stories, season two told of their efforts to reclaim, and, now, season three shows us how they are all connected.

Treme is a series based on New Orleans musicians. It brings us a series of characters who are musicians or work with them, or have a place where musicians congregate. Music is the basis of the parade. When I think of New Orleans, I think of the parades, and 'Treme' three is a parade. A journalist shows up to help a lawyer follow the leads to a murderer, a down and out former addict musician finds his way to sobriety, a chef moves back from New York to her own restaurant, a bar owner tries to find her rapist, a young student wants to find her...

O Yeah!
I have followed Treme from the first season til the third. I have enjoyed the touching storyline that is told from person to another. It is amazing how the people of New Orleans have managed to work through their problems, trials, disappointments, and tragedies. They have tried to overcome many obstacles and adversities. That is what some of the people have tried to do since their devasting ordeal with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The cast in this series are extremely talented in their craft as they have tried to portray the good, the bad, the pain, and the up and down struggles of some of the residents of New Orleans. Bravo cast and crew. Press on citizens of New Orleans, change is gonna come.

Fantastic
I will not include any spoilers in this.
The third season continues the excellence of this show.
Anyone who saw The Wire and enjoyed it must see Treme, not only because it shares many of the same production crew and some actors, but because it is better than The Wire.
It draws together different strands of society and interweaves them in an intelligent, exciting and poignant storyline about post-Katrina New Orleans.
Slicker, more sophisticated and better acted than so much of what else is about.
The (Jazz and Folk) music is first class too.

2 Guns (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD with UltraViolet)

Fun and Involving
So these two guys are gonna rob a bank...This is sort of a Spy vs Spy, as two undercover agents from two different government organizations, neither of whom knows of the other's link to his real employer, rob a bank together, only to discover they have been set up...plus there is waaaaay more money than they expect. $43.125M!

Directed by Baltasar Kormákur ("The Deep" one of my favorites from the 2013 Seattle International Film Festival) and written by Blake Masters (Lots of TV) based on Boom Studio's graphic novels, this is fun all the way, with enough comedy to keep ME happy and enough action to entertain the screening audience.

We enjoy:
* Denzel Washington ("Flight") is Bobby, the steady, focused DEA guy whose patience is sorely taxed by his gabby sidekick.
* Mark Wahlberg ("Broken City") is Stig, an ebullient (and very funny) Naval Intelligence officer...plus he's a GREAT shot!
* Paula Patton ("Disconnect") plays Deb, the beauty...

Entertaining buddy movie and action flick
"2 Guns" (2013 release; 109 min.) reunites director Baltasar Kormákur with Mark Wahlberg (they previously teamed up on another enjoyable crime action movie called "Contraband"), and for good measure Denzel Washington is brought along to co-star. The plot is pretty convoluted, and I don't spoil anything when I simply say that you shouldn't accept anyone being who they say they are. Apart from that, everyone is chasing $41.125 million in drug money.

Several comments: first, once in a while I need to see a great action movie, and this one certainly lives up to its billing. As the movie opens we see the characters played by Washington and Wahlberg observing a bank which they've decided to rob, from across the street in a diner. Some funny back-and-forth banter between the two ensues but before you know it we are in the middle of the hold-up, and its aftermath. Second, almost more important than the actual plot is the writing of the movie. The script is sharp from that...

This Will Rock You!
Fun, action, laughs and good times role in 2 GUNS. Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg are mesmerizing in this buddy movie extravaganza. There is never a dull moment. 2 GUNS truly rocks. Director Baltasar Kormákur gave us Mark Wahlberg in CONTRABAND in awesome sleeper of a movie. Kormákur outdoes himself here with Washington and Wahlberg. They seem like naturals in this film. Yes, I recommend it. This will rock you!

Dealin With Idiots

Hilarious Improv work
Jeff Garlin's newest film, "Dealin' With Idiots" is a hilarious, improvised look at crazy parents. When Max decides he wants to research the parents on his kid's little league team, he gets way more than he was interested in. We get to hear Coach Jimbo (Bob Odenkirk) rant about the brother that stole the girl of his dreams, see Coach Ted (JB Smoove) give a tour of his Compound, and a host of other nuts do nutty things. I saw Jeff do a Q&A after this premiered at the amazing Music Box in Chicago and he talked about how the entire movie was improvised. He and his co-writer Peter Murrieta were the only 2 that saw the brief script. There is some hilarious improv work in the film and the actors and actresses are all at the top of their game. This movie is a blast and you should watch it rather than some other crappy movie.

funny movie
funny movie, very funny! highly recommended this movie, its pretty funny and just a great little indy movie, 2 thumbs up!

High Expectations
First, let me say that I LOVE Jeff Garlin. I am a huge Curb Your Enthusiasm fan. I heard him on the NPR show, Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me! over the weekend and promptly rented the film because I couldn't wait to see it. It was timely because my husband had just had a 'difference of opinion' with some insane soccer parents from our 10 year old's team and we thought this film would bring comic relief. Perhaps our expectations were too high, but we thought it fell a bit flat. The premise is funny, Jeff Garlin is funny, the cast is amazingly funny and talented, but somehow, all together, it didn't quite gel in our opinion. We fell asleep about 45 minutes into it. The next day we finished it because we had paid $6.99 to rent it, and our opinion wasn't any different. Don't get me wrong, there are many funny moments. Overall I would recommend waiting until it is free to Prime members; just my opinion.

Silk: Season One

Six Episodes Of Cutthroat Courtroom Competition: A Solid, If Not Spectacular, Legal Drama From Britain
Television has been populated by so many legal dramas through the years, it has become increasingly difficult to make the genre seem fresh and exciting. "Silk" is just the latest affair from the BBC. Premiering in 2011, the show is ramping up for the debut of its third season later this year in Britain after having its second season nominated for a BAFTA TV Award for Best Drama Program. Unlike comparable American programming, British television tends to be served up in much smaller doses. Therefore, Season One of "Silk" is defined by only six hour long episodes. The show is based around a group of ambitious barristers (led by Maxine Peake as Martha Costello) who all seek advancement within the legal field. The next step up the career ladder is to appointed to the Queen's Council (QC) and that honor is referred to as "taking silk" due to the gowns worn at that level. As this is a merit based appointment, it is imperative to be noticed as a winner. So "Silk," while episodic in...

Very Good but not Terrific like Comparable BBC fare
There are so many outstanding UK law and crime shows that one can't help compare them to one another. This is another entry and it is a very good one but I can't say it knocks me out like so many of the UK series do. We first saw this setting in RUMPOLE, of the trying of cases by barristers and their all trying to advance themselves in the Inns of Court. Becoming QC is paramount, called "wearing silk" and hence the title. That is exactly what two barristers are trying to do, get the silk being dangled in front of them. So we watch them try cases while they go about this. There is no humor, like there was in Rumpole though, which is a big loss. Also, these cases are not riveting drama like THE ACCUSED, another UK law series which is absolutely fantastic. Nor is JUDGE DEED which had the absolutely splendid Martin Shaw hearing these cases as the judge. However, these are well written dramas about interesting cases. I would rent these, not buy them. I can't imagine watching them...

Superb Drama
Seasons one and two of Silk are extraordinary, splendidly written and splendidly acted drama. Yes, Silk is a "legal drama," but somehow that category seems quite inadequate. Although the characters' "home lives" are implied they are virtually never dramatized. On the other hand the rivalries and tensions of their work lives are vivid, believable and fascinating. And although the courtroom battles are perforce conducted verbally, each one turns out to reveal so much more about the various cases assigned to the barristers that it seems fair to call them both mysteries and thrillers. My husband and I watched these side by side, and at times we were convulsed with laughter, at times in tears, and most of the time we were simply riveted. In fact we found Silk too exciting to watch directly before bedtime. But do be very clear about this: these dramas are for the many reviewers here who hunger for highly intelligent television and bemoan the swift cancelation of excellent shows in favor of...

Divergence Eve: Complete Collection

Not what I was expecting
Before I start my review let me say that I picked up Divergence Eve hoping to add a nice fan-service anime to my library. This was because the series has been hammered due to its extremely well endowed female leads. To be hoenst the only series I know of with women that are even in the same league being Eiken an eihii series. I thought I knew what I was in for when I popped in the first disc. Mainly being a show more concerned about showing panties and cleavage then story line and such. However I was pleasantly surprised. Divergence Eve is actually a really good series.

One last thing before my actual review. Divergence Eve outside of jiggle shots, which there is no opportunity lost for, it only has the normal amount of fan fair. Meaning on two or three shots of a character naked and maybe one or two pantie and braw shots. In fact doesn't take a few chances for fan fair.

And finally my review. Yes I know it took me awhile. firts and most importantly Divergence...

4 stars for story, but minus 1 for no extras!
I rented the original release of Volume 1 of Divergence Eve from an online service, and even though the disc was defective (preventing me from watching the second half of Episode 3 and all of Episode 4), what I was able to see entertained and intrigued me enough to want to spring for the "Collection" when it was released.

Unfortunately, this is not the complete collection. Yes, all 14 episodes are here - but nothing else! Instead of simply duplicating the original discs for this release, ADV actually took the trouble of pressing new discs that don't include any of the bonus materials! No clean opening and closing animation, no audio commentary, no mini-manga, nothing but the episodes themselves. Sure, it's more economical to buy this set than the three original individual volumes, but it still boggles my mind that ADV went to the trouble (and expense!) of removing the extras from the "Collection".

As for the story itself: it's "hard" sci-fi (by which I don't mean...

Outdated Anime
First I need to tell you that the ending will leave you hanging. You should not view this as a stand alone series, but as Part I; the Misaki Chronicles Misaki Chronicles: Complete Collection'being part II.

Divergence Eve is based on the idea that if you have good computer graphics and plenty of over-endowed women, no one will notice if the plot is weak. Unfortunately the graphics are no longer cutting edge and the giant foot-ball shaped breasts are more comical than sexy.

The plot is slow moving. For some reason they stuck the second to the last episode first, presumably to give the show some action early on. The overall effect is to leave the viewer confused half of the time and the other half bored with the dramatic 'revelations' which were spoiled by the first episode. Even as such the plot draws you in, but the series simply ends with no resolution and with unresolved issues...

Like Crazy [HD]

BLU RAY UPDATE: 4 1/2 stars for an honest depiction of young romance
There have many films over the years about long distance romance including 2010's cute romantic comedy "Going the Distance." In that film it involves one person in New York and the other in L. A. The characters are put in circumstances that bring a chuckle or two. That way, the angst of the difficult romance is lessened. In this film whose title comes from a line "I love you `like crazy'" our lovers have more obstacles including distance. Jacob (Anton Yelchin) is a teaching assistant at a Los Angeles college where Anna (newcomer Felicity Jones) is a student from England. She has eyes for Jacob and leaves him a rather lengthy note on his car windshield. We only see glimpses of the note, but Jacob appreciates the effort and the humor of the contents. They go out and begin dating and eventually fall in love. During this section of the film we of course get to witness what I refer to as the "falling in love part". That is, running on the beach, eating ice cream, riding bumper...

Some of this movie just doesn't make sense...
Okay, let's start with Jacob's plywood chair company. Every time he started to draw a new plywood chair idea on a napkin, I had to laugh. Leave the plywood chairs to IKEA and other mass manufacturers.
I found some moments in this movie compelling, but for the most part it was agonizing to watch Anna and Jacob torture each other and their other partners with the ebb and flow of living together and living apart. Jennifer Lawrence does an admirable job portraying Jacob's other very admirable love interest. Felicity Jones' Anna seems to take the reins much of the time to keep whatever is left of their relationship from fading into the past. Anton Yelchin's Jacob is a limp, malleable character who goes with the flow probably more than he should.

SPOILER ALERT Ultimately the two have legal rights to live together in the US. When Anna receives the call from her parents' friend Harry (who has toiled for months to get approval for Anna to be able legally be in the US),...

Silence speaks volumes
I loved this movie! It is raw, emotional, and cuts to the very core of how distance and time affect a relationship. It is a movie directed by emotions and feelings, by silences and music rather than words. Watch it with an open mind and an open heart.

Family Ties: The Complete Series

what's on the bonus disc?
I was disappointed years ago when Season 1 came out on DVD without the pilot version of the first episode. There is a version of the pilot with a different opening theme, different scenes, and different music. This ought to have been a bonus on the DVD set. Could that possibly be one of the bonus items on the new disc? If it is, I can change from 4 to 5 stars, although since this isn't released yet and I don't have it, why is amazon letting me review it? My star rating is not valid, but I had to select something in order for it to let me ask this question.

FINALLY
I am so happy they finally came out with this; especially since they now released season 6 and 7 on dvd. I also heard on the imdb message board that this will come with the family ties frame thing that shows in the opening sequence and a special bonus disc! I will surely be buying this.

Last Tango in Halifax

A Charming Second Chance Romance Develops Into A More Eccentric Family Drama As It Progresses
When I heard the initial concept of the new BBC series "Last Tango in Halifax," I thought that it might be a cute romantic trifle. What's not to like about a sweet late period romance with two senior citizens of the over seventy set finding love? Despite the presence of the great Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid, I was afraid that the series might be too safe and too saccharine. Somehow, I just feel like older characters receive very little respect in mainstream entertainment. They are either cutesy or curmudgeonly (but still lovable) with little real world nuance or dimension. A lot of recent movie hits featuring an older cast (Quartet, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) have been pleasant escapism, but didn't really hold any surprises. And as this six part series began, I still wasn't convinced. Early episodes are indeed amusing and romantic. But as the six episodes progress, the scope of the show expands to include a larger cast. What's funny is that Jacobi and Reid might be the sanest...

Wow!
I just saw the first episode on PBS affiliate GPB Georgia. It was fantastic! I became a fan of Derek Jacobi during the Brother Cadfael series years ago. He's every bit as good now in a totally different role. The other cast members are excellent and the multiple plot lines interesting, to say the least. This new series should be thoroughly engaging, judging by the first episode. I can hardly wait a week to see the next one. I will definitely buy the DVD if my expectations are realized.

Couldn't wait for the next episode until the last two!
Review for early episodes: As another reviewer said, a good show leaves you longing for the next episode. Well, I can't wait! Love this show, my favorite on PBS since Downton Abbey! I concur with much of the K. Harris review, but will add a few wrinkles of my own. First of all, this show is honest. People are flawed, life is complicated, and no one is one-dimensional. The writing is sublime. The acting is wonderful, of course, starting with Reid and Jacobi. I'm in love with them! Who can resist their joy in finding each other after so many years? Reid's character has something of a bitter edge, but Jacobi's character accepts her unconditionally and tenderly. I loved their spirited discussions of religion and politics, while always knowing that their love is bigger than their differences. Their daughters are a mess, but such an intriguing mess! Their layered performances and changing relationships with each other, as well as other characters, are complex and fascinating. Perhaps...

Power Rangers: Seasons Eight - Twelve

I love it! 20 years in the making!
I bought the two sets of Mighty Morphin box set and Seasons 4-7 together straight from Shout Factory and I love them but was wondering when they would release the rest. A few weeks ago I learned that there would be a complete series set of all 20 seasons (with extra slots for the 2 movies) in a Jason (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers' Red Ranger) helmet. This left me very happy, sad and confused all at the same time. I was happy that there would finally be a complete set of every season starting 20 years ago at the original all the way to the latest season of Mega Force with an awesome helmet case for every single disc and even spaces for the two movies (which you can find just about anywhere for about $5 each now). I was very sad to see this because I spent over $200 already for almost half of the seasons and if I bought this, I would have 7 seasons of duplicate discs and wasted money. I was confused because I thought that they had completely forgotten about the season box sets and went...

Let's Keep This Party Going!!!
Holy smokes the next wave of Official Power Rangers DVD!!! I've purchased season 1-7 and could not be happier with Shout!'s production! Some worry about the quality of having 10 episodes on each disc, but it's really not that bad. I know the entire series (all 18 seasons) are available on Netflix but this is a FANTASTIC purchase for any PR fan or collector. Great quality, they took their time making these box sets.

Power Rangers at its best!
Im very pleased that these seasons of power rangers are finally coming together in this box set. This set is truly worth the price!

Blackfish

Powerful, Not To Be Missed
Everyone should see this movie to learn the truth about orcas in captivity. It's a terrifying, heartbreaking, well-constructed argument and the images and interviews will haunt you. I can't wait until an equivalent documentary is done about other forms of animal captivity like circuses and zoos, etc.

Life...
When I watched The Cove Documentary, the disturbing part was how could a group of people in a civilized society known for their accomplishments in this case Japanese, gather up hundreds of dolphins every year, year after year and slaughter those dolphins by hitting them so hard that blood covers such a huge area in the ocean without any protest or any resistance from a single citizen, all in the name of gathering and selling few dolphins to other nations and the rest of their catch to their citizens for a whale meat instead of a dolphin meat. To understand the impact of the Sea World, an American business on dolphins, killer whales, etc. as well as the Japanese, one needs to watch A Fall from Freedom Documentary. These days, the Japanese Navy even accompanies whale killing vessels in Antarctica supporting the Japanese fisherman from...

All hail Tilikum
Killer whales have often been referred to as docile yet extremely intelligent and friendly creatures, but Gabriela Cowperthwaite's documentary "Blackfish" puts a bit of a different spin on it. While Orcas may be friendly out in the wild, they're also extremely family oriented meaning that one killer whale can't be ripped from its natural habitat or its pack and be placed in a concrete pool with a bunch of other strange killer whales and be considered a family or be expected to perform for our amusement without any sort of backlash. "Blackfish" takes a look at what the possible psychological effects of what happens when an Orca is taken from its family at a young age and mistreated nearly its entire life.

"Blackfish" mostly follows a killer whale named Tilikum who was captured at a young age back in 1983 in the North Atlantic. While you learn about Tilikum's upbringing, "Blackfish" also shines light on how shady SeaWorld operates as several former trainers speak out about...

Man of Steel (Blu-ray+DVD+UltraViolet Combo Pack)

Man of Steel...
Let me say right away that I am fan, so if you imagine that there may be some bias about this film, you'll be right. As much as I enjoy the work done by Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan I am, first and foremost, a fan of Superman the character. Beyond the super powers and god like awe that surrounds the character, he is inherently a symbol for the potential good of the human race. He represents the best of both his worlds and acts as a guide for others. Superman is often referred to as the "constant boy scout". It's easier to understand when you truly see the kind of temperament and control he exhibits on a nearly constant basis. When faced with adversity how easy would it be for him to destroy his opponent in the blink of an eye, and yet he refrains from doing so. He is a symbol for all that we can achieve, good and bad. In some ways he is the embodiment of hope; hope for the future, hope for the world, and hope in our own personal lives. So, when I say that I am a fan I...

Needs more respect.
While I can see and understand some of the complaints against this film, some of them, on the other hand, are hypocritical nonsense.

The internet isn't the best way to put a films reception into perspective. From perusing comic book message boards you would think this is the most hated film of all time. Not so. It is mostly met with favorable praise. But the vocal minority is REALLY vocal on this one. Complaints about structure and editing are one thing (I don't agree with them at all but they are legitimate) but the huge hubbub over the destruction in this film is over the top and frankly all out misguided and downright false.

It seems the internet can't make up it's mind on what they want their Superman to be. For YEARS all fans ever did was say they wanted a Superman movie where he can really show off his powers. They begged and whined and pleaded for a Superman film to deliver the action that the character deserves on screen. And when Superman Returns came...

Nolan Plot and Snyder Action Makes for the Best Movie This Year
The "Man of Steel" movie is both action and plot heavy, dealing with complex spiritual issues as well as what it means to be human. On the other hand, the action is heavy-handed, with punches, bullets, and other weaponry being thrown at people on a regular basis. This combination of depth and intensity creates a powerful film, both visually as well as in theme. The performance of the story was breathtaking. As expected, the visuals were stunning; the special effects were phenomenally crisp and the scope of the camera was often wide, presenting the scenery itself as a spectacle. The acting was exceptional as well. Shannon's Zod was angry, driven, and resourceful, everything a good soldier is meant to be. His lines were powerful and his intentions and thoughts were practically visible on his face as he acted. Cavill's Superman also performed exceptionally. Each line was delivered with honesty to the character. His part was not really dialogue heavy, but his role was emotionally...

Barbara [Blu-ray]

4.5 stars... outstanding German political and relationship drama
"Barbara" (2012 release from Germany; 105 min.) brings the story of a female doctor, Barbara (played by Nina Hoss), in a provincial town in East Germany in 1980. It appears Barbara had applied for an exit visa so as to leave the country, and as a result was demoted from a prestigious hospital in Berlin to now work in the country side. Barbara has a lover, some well to-do guy in West Germany who sends her money so as to prepare things for her to escape East Germany illegally. All the while, Barbara gets to know Andre (played by Ronald Zehrfeld), a colleague doctor who also has been sidetracked (but for different reasons we later learn) in the country side. Right away from the very start Andre has a crush on Barbara, and he is trying to charm her non-stop. As all of this is happening, Barbara takes a special interest in Stella, a teenage girl who has escaped from a nearby youth labor camp and suffers from various ailments. To tell you more about the plot would ruin your viewing...

Heroism in East Germany
Not as powerful as "Lives of Others" - but there is in this film an amazing portrayal of heroism on a one to one, human to human level, and of doing what you can do and holding what is truly of value close when times are toughest.

Barbara.
This is a fine - if very understated - piece of film-making.

Barbara Wolf (Nina Hoss) is a city doctor exiled to a provincial hospital in the German Democratic Republic in 1980; closely watched by the secret police and distrustful of her colleagues, she leads an isolated, paranoid existence while planning her escape to Denmark with the help of her wealthy West-German lover.
The film is slow-moving, but infused with a subtle tension; Hoss gives a mesmeric performance as a dedicated professional who is also a vulnerable, sensitive being, persecuted by an intolerable system. Her supervisor, Andre (Ronald Zehrfeld) whom she gradually comes to trust, is more accepting of his situation and is sympathetic towards her, despite his role in monitoring her for the authorities.
The film is dour but compelling; a restrained but thoughtful and intelligent drama, well made, photographed and acted.
The cover blurb suggests it will be of interest to those who liked "The Lives...

Very clever and entertaining
Yes, this movie is odd, but its entertaining. It reminds me of a Wes Anderson movie. Very Rushmor-ish. It's funny, and twisted and dark and like I said, entertaining. It's a movie that you can watch more than once and enjoy.

Akira: 25th Anniversary Edition (Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

AKIRA on Blu-ray is the first film (animated or live) to be featured in 192kHz audio! Don't throw away your DVD's just yet!
"AKIRA", the 1988 anime film that became the masterpiece of mangaka and director Katsuhiro Otomo.

My first viewing of "AKIRA" was back in 1993. I have to be truthful, it was one of those films that I had to watch several times because I felt I was missing something integral. Each time I watched the film, there was always something new that I picked up and for anyone who has seen this animated film, just how much was put into the animation, the detail for an animated film.

In 1988, Disney had "Oliver & Friends" and being touted as the first animation to utilize hand drawn art and computerized graphics and as the film incorporated some darkness that may scare the kiddies, in Japan, "AKIRA" was a film that would set records in the Summer and eventually get a limited release in theaters.

The film would surprise and shock people because this was not a children's animation, this was geared for adults. And did it look awesome at that time!

Flash...

Akira
Akira is one of those movies that you never forget. The images are extremely powerful and graphic, so that they stick with you long after the movie is over. Despite its sometimes-confusing plot line, this movie is a wonderfully written, chilling look into the future, and into humanity as a whole. The movie more or less centers around a teenage biker gang in Neo-Tokyo, thirty-years after World War III. The main characters, Kaneda and Tetsuo, are two childhood friends who are constantly in competition with each other (Tetsuo being the weaker, taunted one.) Regardless, Tetsuo still looks up to Kaneda. As the introduction moves out of the chase scene, an interesting encounter with an odd looking child (who awakens the physic abilities lying dormant within Tetsuo's mind) truly begins the movie.

The animation quality in this movie is almost enough of a reason to buy it. The detail is incredible, umparalled even by Disney?s standards. No one background or setting is used twice, and the...

Everything Falls Down
Akira is most frequently designated as one of the seminal anime films, like 'Ghost in the Shell,' which have done much to define the potential of the Japanese genre. By the making of this film, 'Akira' was already as very popular manga (by Katsuhiro Otomo). Its theme is one that recurs frequently in anime, the good and the bad of human 'evolution.'

Neo Tokyo is Tokyo reborn on the ashes of the devastation of the next world war. Set in 2019, the city is already large, crowded, and apparently thriving. Yet, as you look at the details of this superbly animated film, it becomes obvious that something is seriously wrong. Discontent has fueled a rising level of social violent, motorcycle gangs make war on the streets, and if one listens carefully, one hears rumors about 'Akira, a savior who wields tremendous powers.

Kanada and Tetsuo are bike gangers, friends since childhood. When a conflict with the clown gang turns ultra-rough, Tetsuo is injured, just as the appearance of a...

As Night Falls

Good fun
This film was a surprising treat to say the least. It's definitely a slow boil in terms of the horror elements but the quirky and unique humor throughout the film kept me engaged. When the horror does deliver, it's that much more fun. With some cool kills and memorable evils, this films definitely worth owning!! I'd watch it as part of a triple feature with Hatchet & Cabin In The Woods.

Yumeria: Complete Collection

Life Sucks, Then You Dream
Yumeria is a 12 episode (300+ minutes) series that follows Tomokazu Mikori, your basic loser who admits that he is a pervert. On his 16th birthday, he falls asleep, only to enter a world where he meets Mone, a young girl who will alter past and future events. It is now up to Tomokazu to save those he cares about from the Faydoom, evil creations in the dream world that are trying to invade the waking world. If he fails, all will be lost and the future devastated. Whats a 16 year old, perverted-loser to do?

The series was pretty good and I found that the trailor that I viewed before I bought it didn't do the series justice. Yes, Tomokazu is a pervert in the series, but not to the extent that the trailor put him as, being as some people understandably don't like perverts. The story also reminded me somewhat of the Matrix in that it spans two worlds, where an event in one will affect the other. This is also one of those series where you have to watch in order to understand...

Plenty of Fan Service
Meet Tomokazu Mikuri, an average everyday boy leading an average everyday dull life. Then his 16th birthday comes and is yet another dull day in his life, but when he goes to sleep, he finds himself in a strange world. After looking around, he sees a giant monster and a little girl with wings doing battle with one another. The girl falls from the sky and Tomokazu saves her and using a power (that's currently unknown to him) recharges the girl so she can defeat the monster.

Upon waking, the girl from his dream is laying in bed with him. Tomokazu has inherited a special power, and that power is to save the everyday world and the dream world from fierce monsters made from the dark thoughts and feelings of people; bent on destroying both worlds. Tomokazu with Mone (the girl from his dreams) as well as childhood friend Mizuki, Kuyou, Neneko/Neito, Megumi, and a mysterious person known as Silk to defend both worlds from destruction. But they can only defend both worlds...

Mone Monene Mone...
I won't repeat the storyline. The animation is good and the characterization is as well. (Even if a little generic). Worth watching in either the dubbed or the subtitled version. Dubbing is very good, keeping the spirit and humor of the series. I'll say it's not spectacular, but it is above average. Voice acting is excellent, especially "Mone" who manages to convey her meaning throughout the series with only the word mone as dialog. It was worth the price.

City Lights (Criterion Collection) BLU-RAY/DVD DUAL FORMAT EDITION

By far my favorite silent film
By 1931 the "talkie" was well-established in Hollywood. The transition was almost complete, and silent film was not just on its way out, it was almost entirely gone.

But this was also the era of Charlie Chaplin. Chaplin knew that the advent of new technology did not mean that old ways of telling a story were somehow automatically inferior. He set out to show that a silent film could still be relevant, and he succeeded with "City Lights."

It's the story of a vagrant, that lovable tramp played by Chaplin, who falls for a young blind girl who sells flowers. He learns that she might have her sight restored by a new medical technique and dedicates himself to obtaining the necessary money to pay for it. She assumes that her benefactor is a rich man, and he can't bring himself to tell her the truth.

The journey of the movie is comedic by nature, with one especially unforgettable boxing scene. But under the comedy lies the nervous uncertainty of the...

5 stars for the movie, 3 stars for making me buy two discs
The title says it all. If Criterion is going this route on all future releases, I guess I won't be buying as many. I wish it were available as a single DVD.

BTW, if you've never seen City Lights, then you're missing a great film.

Prince Avalanche [Blu-ray]

Reap the rewards of solitude
Writer and director David Gordon Green has kind of lost his way over the last five years or so. Known for making independent dramas that were genuinely well received by critics, Green made the jump to R-rated comedy in 2008 with "Pineapple Express" which went on to gross $87 million domestically on a $27 million budget. Green would stay in the R-rated comedy game for a while with "Your Highness" and "The Sitter," both of which either flopped or barely made a profit. "Prince Avalanche" seems like a return to form for Green and while it isn't groundbreaking, it's definitely an experience worth having.

"Prince Avalanche" has some amazing cinematography. The film opens with fires damaging acres and acres of land as you helplessly witness a sea of trees burn to the ground. As you're watching it, you can't help but feel the devastation of the fire, the extreme loss, and the severe sense of hopelessness. At the same time, it's kind of beautiful in a sorrowful kind of way. Little...

A movie that isn't for everyone but one that I enjoyed and recommend for fans of indi-movies. Acting is great. I say B+.
"There's a difference between being lonely and being alone." Alvin (Rudd) and Lance (Hirsch) are working on a road in the middle of nowhere. Alvin is dating Lance's sister and the two have a friendly relationship but they aren't really friends. During the summer they experience the high and lows of love and begin to bond over the ups and downs of life. First of all even though Paul Rudd is in this I would not call this a comedy. I really liked this but do not go in expecting to laugh. One other disclaimer is that this isn't a movie where a lot happens. The director of this directed Pinapple Express and The Sitter and this could not be more different then those two. This is a hard movie to review because really nothing happens but I did really enjoy this. This is basically just two guys experiencing life and love. There is a sub-plot with a woman they meet that seemed to have deeper meaning that I couldn't grasp. This is a movie I recommend though. Overall, a movie that isn't for...

Have no idea what the hype is all about
My son convinced me to watch this with him after a date recommended it to him. Yee gads! This was the most boring, plotless movie I have seen in years. Two dudes painting lines in rural Texas. So much potential and so little delivery. They never quite develop as characters nor is the peripheral mystery ever given any wings. Pass this one by.

The Classics and the Super Friends...
This particular season of the Super Friends, out of it's entire 1973-1985 run on Saturday morning, had for so many years been held back from DVD release for whatever reason. A lot of us felt copyright issues had a big influence over the lack of 1979's episodes being available. Apparently the powers that be are fully aware of how sought after this season is that the release has gone through a rather unique process. Available as a Target exclusive several months ago it's now being made available for pre-order on Amazon for a November release (a month AFTER the DVD release of the 1981 short episodes titled "Legacy of Super Powers").

**SPOILERS ARE ABUNDANT**

I love all the episodes! I can't really pick out an absolute favorite but I will lean heavily on the episode titled "Universe of Evil". It's just such a drastically different kind of episode from those have come before and those that came after with the possible exception being the 1985 episode, "The Death of...

Awesome but whats up ??
IM thrilled that i can finally complete my super friends dvd collection after all these years

what i dont understand is why on earth is Season 5 and Season 6 available before Season 4 ??

The Paradise: Season One

Retail Therapy: Eight Episodes Of Lightweight Escapism Set In A Posh Department Store
Looking for a stately British period piece about a burgeoning retail empire? No, I'm not talking about "Mr Selfridge." Prior to the ITV Studios depiction of London's elite shopping emporium Selfridges in 2013, the BBC had already unleashed the handsome production "The Paradise" in 2012. Somebody has a love of shopping! Or maybe they just think that the birth and heyday of department stores makes a sexy setting for romantic entanglements and personal intrigue! Of course, "Mr Selfridge" was the first to receive distribution in the North American market being picked up by Masterpiece Theater, undoubtedly due to the presence of Jeremy Piven in the lead role. But don't let that dissuade you from sampling "The Paradise." Ostensibly based on the novel "The Ladies' Paradise" (Au Bonheur des Dames) by Emile Zola, the adaptation may not fully satisfy purists looking for Zola's vision. There are glimpses of his style, but this is a decidedly soapier affair. But that's not all bad for a...

Enchanting Period Drama
Set in an undisclosed location in the north of England during the 1870s, 'The Paradise' is a historically accurate period drama regarding Britain's first department store, and the lives of those people affected by it. From Mr Moray, who struggles to make his visionary enterprise thrive, to the small shopkeepers he has inadvertently put out of business, to the the wealthy Glendennings and humble employees alike. Everyone, including the side characters, are richly drawn and come to life. Especially Denise, who quickly proves adept at her position in lady's wear (much to the chagrin of Miss Audrey, the strict departmental head who Sarah Lancashire plays to such perfection, she steals every scene), and becomes something of a love interest to Moray. The tension there, I might add, is lovely, and plays a role in the last episode's cliffhanger. Thankfully, 'The Paradise' has been recommissioned for a second series.

In addition to the character driven story lines, this made for a...

Excellent start for a new Masterpiece Theater series
The Paradise is the new Masterpiece Theater series that just started Sunday, Oct. 6. We are immediately introduced to our heroine Denise, well played by Joanna Vanderham, who has just come to the city from the country. She tries to get a job from her uncle, but his store is being slowly put out of business by an exciting new department store called The Paradise. Denise applies for and is given a job on probation as a trainee in dress sales.

The owner of The Paradise, Mr. Moray, played well by Emun Elliott, is determined to make his establishment the finest store of its kind in England. He has plenty of good ideas, but lacks the money to put his ideas into practice. He seeks financial assistance from Lord Glendenning, well played by the veteran actor Patrick Malahide. Lord Glendenning takes an interest in Moray only because his daughter loves the young man and begs her father to help him. It appears that Moray takes advantage of young Lady Glendenning because she is...

does it really need to be in volumes? why not just release the complete season by its self? i think Shout Factory is getting a little greedy. i already have plans to buy the 4-7 season pack, so there is no need for me to have this. 5 stars because its power rangers but im going to minus 2 stars cause we all know that the complete season can be put in one box set.

Cagney & Lacey: The Complete Collection (Includes TV Movies)

WHEN IS THIS GOING TO BE ON DVD???????
All of my tapes are wearing out. I taped the show when it was on Lifetime, which edited the show for their commercials. Please bring back the best show ever on television with complete episodes. With all of the dreck put out on DVD I can't understand why this one is not out on DVD. Thanks, Anita

Come on already!!! BRING THIS OUT ON DVD!!!!
This is one the best if not THE BEST shows of the 80's .... I cannot believe the 'crap' shows that are out on DVD and this classic police drama showing 2 x excellent role model females as their lead actors is not out on DVD .... WHEN IS IT COMING OUT!!!!

Cagney & Lacey a must for current TV on DVD fans.
This is one of the best police drama series of its time. Multi-emmy award winning actress awards for its leading women characters is enough to say that series is among those devoted to DVD release. I have many if not most of the episodes recorded on VHS, but can not wait for the official release on DVD. Not only does this show portrait women in the field of the police force, but women in all walks of life in their professional fields. This was one of the greatest shows to air in its time era and deserves the time honored deliverance to DVD.

Pound Puppies: Holiday Hijinks

Great show
This new version of Pound Puppies (from The Hub Network and Hasbro Studios) is a great, extremely underrated show. The series has sharp humor, appealing characters, a terrific voice cast, and sweet, touching story-lines.

The series stars the voices of Eric McCormack, Yvette Nicole Brown, Michael Rapaport, John DiMaggio, Alanna Ubach, René Auberjonois, and M. Emmet Walsh.

According to the Shout Factory website, the episodes on this disc will be

"I Heard the Barks on Christmas Eve"
"I Never Barked for My Father"
"Barlow"
"Good, Dog McLeish!"
"The Prince and the Pupper"

(You will notice that the last episode, "The Prince and the Pupper", has very rough, rigid animation compared to the rest of the episodes on the disc. After the airing of it, the animation studio changed, and the series now has clean, fluid animation)

If you are a fan of this show, then you will definitely want to pre-order this DVD.

Astonishing series, a must have and see!
There has never been another hour long television program quite like "Naked City". For those unfamiliar with this gem, the series takes place in New York City circa 1958-1963 and is filmed on location. Though the series is known for its humanist approach to the depiction of crime, this is no mere parlor drama: there is action aplenty and wide dramatic street scenes, shoot outs and car chases.

Prior to this complete set release, only some fifty episodes of one hundred and thirty-eight had been made available. That makes for another eighty-eight tales even if you own the previously released mini-sets! For fun, look up the locales featured in the show on Google Earth and see how things have changed or not. Notice pop-culture history in the making in the show's backgrounds, such as a copy of Spider-man's first appearance on a newsstand rack!

"Naked City" is anchored by four main characters, three of them police officers of varying ages and fourth is the youngest...

Astonishingly Good Value Box Set
Whilst sympathising with people who (like myself) have purchased previous releases of this series, it is worth pointing out that the current offer price for the 'complete edition' is so reasonable for the amount of material on offer that criticism is really all but silenced.

It is to be hoped that the quality of the prints in the forthcoming edition will be sufficiently high to match the convenience of having everything in a once-and-for-all box.....finally.

The Story of Little Monica

love them anime girls!
'little monica' is a strange sorta tale...(with lots of 'tail') no more or less silly than most hentai titles...the animation is decent and the girls are all really cute, (and remember all animated girls in the series are '18 or older' wink wink)

kinda short...but then most hentai titles are...

still lots of sexy anime fun...

Boring with too many closeups
Hated it. The girls are plently cute, but the animation is like a slide show and there are too many closeups for my liking. The story if pretty stupid too.

I love Monica's story
Wil should lighten up when he returned to his home town and found out it is not the same. It has turn into a place filled with lust and sex. It has effect Monica and turn her into a cat like stripper. He is wasting his time doing whatever he can to get her out of that business.

Dexter: The Complete Final Season [Blu-ray]

Disappointing Season; Honest Assesment (with no big spoilers)
This is an honest review for the person who is actually considering buying season 8 and has presumably seen one or more previous seasons. (no one starts on the final season, do they?) With a couple minor exceptions, I won't spoil anything.

It seems many of the other reviews have taken issue with the plot; love it or hate it. I'm here to tell you, it's irrelevant. Why? An implausible or unrealistic plot will always be trumped by character development. If the characters are believable, likeable, captivating, and have chemistry with one another, the show will be fun to watch, irrespective of the plot. Imagine this for a plot line: "Protagonist serial killer rescues stepsister after she falls in love with doctor who is also a serial killer and protagonist's brother." Plausible? Not a chance. But it doesn't matter- everyone agrees, season 1 was one of the most enjoyable to watch. It was all because of the characters. Great characters make the story captivating regardless of how...

Slow, Awkward Ending - a Complete Let Down of Expectations
WARNING: SPOILERS

I would have given this last season of Dexter one star, but out of respect for the series as a whole, I gave it two. I loved this series! I watched faithfully and never missed an episode. And when I heard this was the last season, I was so hoping that the writers would come up with a spectacular ending (not necessarily happy, but something suitably jaw dropping). What a disappointment!! This season (to put it in a word) STUNK! The pace was unbelievably slow and monotonous; you thought, surely, surely, the writers were just building up to a grand finale - but then the finale came and it was not grand, or jaw dropping.

The writing was weak, the interaction between the characters was weak. It was like the writers just gave up and went on auto-pilot. The bad guy of the season, the Brain Surgeon, should have been Dexter's greatest challenge - ending with an antagonist that he either couldn't beat, or gave his life trying to beat (which would...

Disappointing, Illogical, Morally Incoherent - A Lengthy Review
***Spoilers***

Incredibly disappointing. I have followed Dexter from Season 1, and have largely been a huge fan of the show. The writing, particularly in the early seasons, was incredible. It was well-executed, highly psychological, and exciting. The show, simply speaking, was 'on', firing on all cylinders. While many have perceived the later seasons as reflecting a decline in terms of direction, writing, excitement, etc., I maintained my appreciation of the show as a whole for many reasons. I also appreciated the development of the characters, the plot lines, and what could have been presented as a satisfying ending to a great show. While I didn't necessarily agree with various choices made (elements of Seasons 5 and 6 come to mind), I understood and accepted the underlying thinking. Season 8, in essence, ran the series into the ground. As a result, this isn't an easy review to write.

The writing, overall, for the end of the series comes across as though it was...

The House of Eliott, Series 2

The House of Eliot - Series 2
I greatly enjoyed both Series 1 and 2. The costumes are spectular. The plot can be a little tedious at times, but there is an impressive cast of different characters coming and going throughout the series. It's also pleasantly predictable, so a lot of fun. My only complaint is that the last episode is a mild cliff hanger, and later episodes aren't available. My compliments to amazon.com for carrying these reviews. It was the only place I found that indicated that there are more episodes to come on DVD. Not even the BBC.UK website provided that information! Thanks, Amazon and volunteer reviewers!

a gem!
I rediscovered this after a long time. This is a great series.I had never seen this in its entirety and look forward to seeing the third and fourth which I understand is not out yet.Its a gem, love the storyline and costumes.,so authentic looking and of the period, even the dialogue.I wish there were more of this genre.

The House of Eliott
I thoroughly enjoyed Seasons 1, 2 and 3 of the House of Eliott. The acting was fantastic, the dresses magnificent and the locations, as with most English mini-series, marvelous. My only complaint is that it doesn't end!! THere is no closure to this. As you approach the last chapter of Season 3 you start to wonder how they are going to wrap it all up in the little time that is left, and - oh surprise! - things are left unsettled and you feel that you need one more season to see how things worked out for everyone! Is there any chance that there is a Season 4 out there somewhere????

The Right Stuff (30th Anniversary Edition) [Blu-ray]

The Greatest American Epic
The fact that "The Right Stuff" lost the Oscar for best picture to "Terms Of Endearment" is beyond me; this movie should have won. The fact that it wasn't a hit at the box office back in 1983 is also beyond me. We are talking about what I think it's the best American epic in all the sense of the word.
It's strange that a Venezuelan-born like me should talk about a movie like this, but I feel that "The Right Stuff" should have been a classic -well, it is for me. The story of the "Mercury" astronauts is portrayed marvelously by Philip Kaufman's direction, showcased beautifully by Caleb Deschanel's stylish photography, and supported by an incredible cast including Scott Glenn, Ed Harris, Barbara Hershey, Sam Shepard, Pamela Reed, Kim Stanley, and Veronica Cartwright.
In fact, I remember when I was watching that movie at home, and my late father asked me if a man that appeared on the screen was astronaut John Glenn because he looked...

Pushing the Envelope of Space!
'The Right Stuff' is one of the most glorious adventure films ever made, a story of incredible heroism, poignant romance, gripping drama, and broad humor...and amazingly, it has actually happened in our lifetimes!

This is a tale of test pilots, 'pushing the envelope', proving the sound barrier couldn't constrain mankind's reach for space. Leading the way is plain-speaking Chuck Yeager (portrayed by Sam Shepard with Gary Cooper-like charm), a Beeman's gum-chewing cowboy with a passion for his feisty wife (the beautiful Barbara Hershey), and hot planes. Not even a broken rib could hold him back when an opportunity to fly the X-1 was offered. His record-breaking flight could fill a movie by itself...and this is just the BEGINNING of the story!

Jumping ahead a few years, Yeager is joined by a new breed of test pilots, whose total love of flight challenges their relationships, and is the true measure of how they define themselves. Among them are 'Gordo' Cooper (Dennis...

It takes more than rocket fuel to attain escape velocity
Weighing in at three+ hours, "The Right Stuff" gives us a fantastic insight into the embryonic stages of humanity's journey into space. It is a personal disappointment to me that our species hasn't done more with the opportunities that space travel has given us.

Based on Tom Wolfe's history of the space program, the film takes us through the early stages of American space exploration. It starts with Yeager's historic speed record when he broke the sound barrier and finishes at the end of the Mercury program. For this reason I think "Apollo 13" makes a good sequel to "The Right Stuff" as it concerns itself with the subsequent Apollo program.

The cast is outstanding and they mostly offer strong performances. For much of the film Sam Shepard gets center stage in his role as Chuck Yeager. However since Yeager was never allowed the opportunity to join the space program the second half of the film focuses on the seven...

One of the Best
This is a great anime that should be at the top of everyone's list. I don't normally do reviews unless they really impress me and this show was one of them. For me personally, the elements in play were the perfect mix. It has great action, is dramatic at the right times, has the perfect element of suspense from episode to episode, and has a bit of romance to complete the masterpiece. The characters are all unique and don't get annoying.

This series was made by the same person that made Sword Art Online and have similar characteristics, but in my opinion this show is better. After the first 2-3 episodes, I found myself making time to keep watching more episodes. For me, this is now in my top 5 favorite anime.

This may include the Dub Version
This show Is a great awesome show and I just want to point out that this may include the first 12 episodes in english but I'd talk with viz before ordering.

The english dub is currently being worked on by Viz and Airs on Neon Alley infact by time this is released the series should be finished and completed in english

Also want to note for people interested in this Accel World is by the guy who created Sword Art Online but if you're looking for AW to be just like Sao you're in for a shocker. I feel AW was overshadowed by Saos popularity and was highly underestimated.

You'll love the Show or the Music ( which is beautiful by the way) or might even love both

Breaking Bad: The Final Season

Lightning in a bottle
Breaking Bad is a once in a lifetime, rare example of the type of show that raises the medium of television beyond the pit of mediocrity it usually resides in. Folks, please don't pass this one up - it may be a long while before another story of this caliber comes by again. This is a series that I will always cherish, and not just for the obvious reasons like the superb acting and the high stakes narrative -- but also for the fact that it gave me hope for the future of television, and the media's potential overall, to serve as a platform for talented writers and actors who actually have something inspired to say about the world we live in.

Best TV series EVER ~ A masterpiece for all time
In my opinion, "Breaking Bad," is the finest series ever produced for television. This doesn't mean that everyone who watches it, is going to like it. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes, and it would be unfair for me to say that this show is "the best," for all viewers. With that said; I can unequivocally state that in "my opinion," this series is the finest and most creatively written one that I've seen in my 65 years on Earth. The plot, the writing and the acting are beyond anything that I've witnessed before. Vince Gilligan, the creator of "Breaking Bad," has produced a series that will undoubtedly be regarded as a masterpiece for all time.

For me; everything else that I've watched or am watching on TV is a letdown after seeing this show. The fact that Gilligan came up with the idea to write this series, boggles the mind, and proves to me that he's a genius. Not only did he come up with the idea; but he also managed to find the perfect actors for all of the deeply...

Mike Ehrmentraut OWNS YOU.
There's not much you can say about a show that you haven't seen the entire season of yet, but what I can say is that BREAKING BAD, under the very watchful eye of Vince Gilligan, has become such an incredibly superior hour of television that it's become the best straight-up crime drama alongside FX's current winner JUSTIFIED, and what has been elevating it beyond belief in its fifth season is not the star of the show Bryan Cranston, who is still brilliant in his portrayal of Walter White, and really knows how to play his cunning and his desperation. It's also not in Aaron Paul, who's been phenomenal since the first minutes of his performance as Jesse Pinkman, the moral compass of the show (basically, if Pinkman thinks you've gone too far, you REALLY have) and its resident guide through the world we've found ourselves navigating through. It's also not through Anna Gunn as the increasingly put-upon and disassociative Skyler White, whose own personal journey over this season has caused...

"Breaking Bad" is now over... but it will live on in the hearts and minds of fans. Fortunately, it will also live on in the blu-ray format - this Complete Series collection is a must own for fans of the show. I was excited and satisfied by the series finale, but I'm also sad realizing that it's all over. If you've always watched the show, or if you've just found it recently (I discovered the show on DVD before getting hooked in Summer 2011), you know how great the show is. If you've never seen "Breaking Bad", then I encourage you to give it a chance. Rarely has a show had this much universal acclaim (a 9.4 on IMDb, a 99/100 on Metacritic, 3 Emmy wins for Drama Actor and 4 Nominations for Best Drama Series, etc).

MIND......BLOWN!!!
QUICK UPDATE - 10/11/13 - Sony Pictures recently announced that this Blu-Ray and DVD set will include a 3-minute alternate ending, and also the making of this alternate ending. I won't write my guess here (don't want to spoil it for those who haven't watched the series yet), but for those who have watched the series, I'm sure you know what that ending is likely to be. I'm very curios to see how they play it out in the alternate ending!

I just finished binge-watching Breaking Bad and I have to say this show is perhaps the finest show I have ever seen. All credit goes to Vince Gilligan for his brilliant writing and narration, and the outstanding cast that has portrayed the characters so well.

If you think about it, the show is fairly low key in terms of its canvas and sets (the other end of this spectrum would be the opulent Game of Thrones where HBO has spared no expense - I'm a big fan of that show as well). The strength of Breaking Bad is its...

Once You Break Bad, There's No Going Back... (Minor Spoilers)
*If you're already familiar with Breaking Bad and just want a review of this box set itself, scroll to the EDIT*

To quote the lead actor Bryan Cranston, "the term 'breaking bad' is a southern colloquialism and it means when someone who has taken a turn off the path of the straight and narrow, when they've gone wrong. And that could be for that day or for a lifetime." This show- well actually to call it a show would be a great understatement, I should say this masterpiece, follows the story of Walter White, and how he breaks bad. Walt is a high school chemistry teacher, and first portrayed as kind of a loser. He's emasculated by his family, disrespected by his students, and bullied by his boss. Forced to work two jobs to take care of his pregnant wife and disabled son, Walt soon finds out that he has terminal lung cancer, with only a few months to live. In order to save money for his family to live off of after he's dead, Walt teams up with his former student, Jesse Pinkman,...

bad film
Boring, poorly acted stupid plot. At the end of the film I was glad it was finally over. Bad film.

the title misleads, doesn't fit well, and cast is better than convoluted script
I already knew one of the lead actresses from her role as skanky slut Lolita-type character on "Californication." She continues her typecast well here. The whole cast is great but the main drawback for me was the ridiculously convoluted script that took too many twists and turns to such a degree that it took away from the good performances by the solid cast. Too bad, really, because it's got such deliciously sexy, deviant scenes. A few moments reminded me of excellent scenes in "Diabolique" with sexual tension thick and exciting. This is good but could have been great. One thing for certain, it is NOT for children, in fact anyone under 18.

Roulette

A Work of Art
Roulette: A Film by Erik Kristopher Myers, covers the story of Dean, Richard, and Sunny. Three people from three very different backgrounds who have come together for a deadly game of Russian Roulette and one last session of group therapy.

This is one of those rare films that come along every couple of years. It's haunting, thrilling, and thought provoking. With controversial subject matters that go into the darkest emotions a human can have. You are put in a room with three people who have no reason to live. You'll be gripping the arm rests of your chair up until the final moments of the film. Award winning performances, directing, and writing, are joined with an attention to detail and passion that shows what an art film making really is. You will not regret watching this, and you won't be the same person after it ends.

Fantastic Indie film... dark, moody and intense
A reprint of my review from IMDB for this film...
I love movies. At the theater, at home... Horror, comedy, thriller, action, all kinds.

Like many folks I love the theater experience, but I have a home theater too, so I kinda get it at home, with cheaper popcorn, and the ability to pause the flick while I go to the bathroom.

When I like a film, I see it more than once, each time, I look at it with a little bit of a different perspective... focusing on the music, sound, lighting, cinematography, acting, directing... maybe I can be a little critical, but if I like a film, I want to break it down into its parts and see what made it tick.

So, along came a locally made indie film called ROULETTE. As with most lower budget indie films, I went into it not knowing exactly what to expect. Filmmaker Erik Kristopher Myers boasted that he was trying to make a film on a tiny budget that would look like a 2 million dollar film.

That's a heck of a...

Masterpiece of indie filmmaking. Must see!
Do yourself a favor and buy this. Pre-order now. If it happens to be released on Blu-Ray, buy that too. I'm telling you. You won't regret it.

As far as independent films go, Roulette is a masterpiece. From beginning to end, the story takes you on a journey through the lives and minds of three interwoven characters, who possess traits of which we can all identify in one way or another. Sunny, the devout god-fearing good girl, fallen from grace into a life of sin and denial. Richard, the "normal" professional who hides behind his personal and marital issues, and spirals into a self-destructive drunken torment. And Dean, the pretty-boy manly-man who is pulled from his perfect life on cloud nine by the wrath of subconsciousness and lies. All are doomed. Or are they? I'll never tell. It's a surprise.

This story is no walk in the park. It's brutal. It's intense. It's disturbing. Some may say "offensive". But those are all qualities that make this film a complete gem,...
